How To Solder Copper Pipes With Water In It: Plumber's Bread Trick DIY

-[ Jeff] Well, here we are now in our lavatory and we’re here make tiling and we’ve come across a dilemma which I’m sure many of youcome across from time to time and that is we were going to solder this extension of copperpipe now onto the end of the piping coming out of the wall. This is the water supply for the toilet, and the lavatory will go right here. Problem is, is look at this, we’ve turn out the sea at the main but hitherto it continues to drip. This is even an hour laterit’s still dripping like this. So you’ll never everever be able to solder copper pipes together whenyou have water in the line. So what we’re going to do isuse an old-fashioned plumber’s subterfuge here and as you can see we havesome white bread here, and what this does is this just buys you a few minutes of season. You shove this down into the pipe far enough away fromwhere you’re going to make the solder connectionhere and this will stop that water flow long enoughfor you to offset the connection and you simply have about a few minutes, so you gotta have all yourtools close by and ready and we’re likewise gonna employment this, this is for my Shop-Vacand we’re gonna suction out whatever water’s still inthe pipe after we plug it to make sure it’s nice and dry. Then we’re going to use our tools here to clean off the hose, deburr it, and clean-living the inside and the outside, and make sure that we have flux on there, and then we’ll positioned this piping on there, and then we’ll solder it andhopefully this is currently working. Okay, so now we’re going to insert the bread into the pipe. And we’re going to stickit back there far enough away with a pencil now, and thatlooks like it’s done the subterfuge so now what we’re goingto do is vacuum out.( vacuum whirring) Okay , now that it’s stoppedI can move this person. Ready? – Yeah. -[ Jeff] Okay, so now we’rejust gonna clean this, clean-living the tube, pull this off firstly.( clean touch crunching) And then we’re gonna cleanthe inside of the pipe. And you notice I’m usinggloves because I don’t want the oil from my hands to getin there and devastate the seam. You utterly cannot letyour hands touch those roles. I’m gonna do another rapid brush now since I passed the cloth over it. Just gonna move it a bit. Now I have a nice clean pipe there. Gonna apply precisely a little of flux, simply a thin film is all you need. Go as depth as you’re gonnago into the coupler with it. I’ll throw a little on the inside more, probably doesn’t need it but. Okay, so now we’re readyto get our connect, kept it on there, and fitsin there nice and good now.Now we’re gonna threw the flameright here on the coupler because the solder will suckin to where the flare is. You don’t wanna heat it out here, you wanna heat it here on the coupler and when you start to seeit bubbling on the flow then you know you’re ready. Okay, so the rule ofthumb with your solder is you wanna use whateverthe diameter of your tube is, that’s how much solder you would use, so it should be a half inch of solder for each side that we do here. Okay, so we’re gonna goahead and fervour it up, and give it a try.( inferno whirring) Okay, investigate the sides back there. I’ll time the other side. The other side’s closer to the water so it’ll probably be alittle harder to heat it.( kindle whirring) Now that it’s all done, we’re gonna give it cool down a minute and then we’re gonna use a cool wet cloth to wipe off the whole jointof the tube expanse there. I don’t like to touch it toomuch until it’s solidified. You wanna just leave it alone, let it come back down to temperature. Let the solder thicken up, and then you’ll be fine. Okay, so now I’m gonna comein now and really wipe it off. And there you have it! Gives it a much better appearance, a little more professional whenyou wipe it off subsequentlies, and we are done. So we have this buckethere up against the wall. -[ Man] Turn on the spray! -[ Jeff] And we’re gonnashoot the water out and see if that exhausts our push.( sea runs) And there it is, there’s ourbread float in the bottom ..
